Ellis Gimbel, one of the seven founders of Gimbel Brothers Department Stores, organized the first Thanksgiving day parade, held on November 25, 1920. The first parade consisted of 50 costumed store employees followed by "the real Santa Claus," marching to the original store location at the corner of 8th and Market Streets in downtown Philadelphia.
The parade appealed to children and families, and proved to be a brilliant strategy for kicking off the holiday shopping season, because Gimbels had the largest toy department in city.
