After their revolt and break with Spanish controlled Mexico, they created the independent Republic of Texas in 1836 to continue to remain free of United States control and laws. Texas was admitted to the Union as the 28th state in 1845 as a slave state and the Republic officially dissolved in 1846. Texas seceded from the United States in 1861, and joined the Confederate States of America.
