Several peoples of Native Americans qualify as such. Before contact with Europeans was established in 1519, there were by varying accounts, between 20 and 40 million people inhabiting the lands of present-day Mexico. Some of these include the Nahuatl, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec and Otomi ethnic groups.
Some of these peoples also had sprawling civilizations, being the most important the Aztec and Mayan civilizations.
