Very hard to pin this one down! I assume you are talking abstraction as in computer programming.
Philip Greenspun had lots to say about it, but I think it would just have been one of these concepts that arise when a group of programmers are working together and adopt a common word to describe a process that they develop.
Lisp developer (originated at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center) certainly utilised abstraction techniques way back in 1958.
