Anthony Johnson was an indentured servant brought over from Angola. Once his debt was paid, he owned property in Virginia. In 1665 he moved to Maryland, where he leased a 300 acre plantation. He was married and had four children. After he died around 1670, the Virginia land he had sold to white settlers was seized by the government and returned to England. The laws regarding Negroes had changed quite a bit in the intervening years.
