Arnold Böcklin
There is no such place called The Isle of the Dead. When a person dies they are taken back to the spirit world from whence they came to await their resurrection. There IS a place called Isle of the Dead just off the coast of Tasmania near to Port Arthur. It was selected as a burial place by the Rev. John Manton in 1833. Between 1833 and 1877 about 1000 burials took place of convicts and paupers. The graves of free preople were located on the high side of the island. There is also a painting by Arnold Bocklin (1827 - 1901) he painted five different versions of a dark and disturbing scene.
