Before they obtained horses the Blackfoot tribes used very large round shields in battles against the Crees, who had similar shields. Both sides would form a battle line some distance from each other and take cover behind these shields while shooting arrows at their enemies; few casualties resulted. When horses reached the Blackfoot they reduced the size of their shields to the standard Plains dimension - around 30 to 32 inches diameter. These shields were made from the thickest part of the bull buffalo's hide (the neck area), which was slowly heated to shrink and thicken it further still. Once treated, the hide was cut into a circle and fitted with a painted and decorated deerskin cover and given a long strap so it could hang around the neck and leave both hands free. The painted designs were usually the result of a sacred vision received by the warrior in a dream or by means of fasting in some secluded place.
