A report by Jo Marchant New Scientist August 31st 2010

Cutting blades that are made of obsidan a volcanic glass that forms a sharp edge when it fractures, was found at the early bronze age settlement called Ikizztepe, in the Black Sea Provence of Samsun in Turkey.

The investigation found 700 skulls in a nearby graveyard and 14 sculls had cuts that could only have been made with a very sharp tool.

The cut marks show the blade was used to make a rectangular opening all the way through the scull.

The patients lived at least 3 years after the surgery because the skull had tried to close the wound.
