Ancient Americans found these beans, and made a bitter drink from it, the predecessor of modern chocolate. this process was brought back to the old world, but was sweetened to form drinking chocolate. the process created two products, cocoa powder and cocoa butter. only the powder was used for drinking chocolate, but an attempt to use the butter to reduce waste created solid chocolate.
