The first book introduces the reader to Elena Gilbert, a beautiful and popular high school student in the small town of Fell's Church, Virginia and her friends Bonnie McCullough, Meredith Sulez, Matt Honeycutt and Caroline Forbes. Caroline is Elena's old friend and is now her competition. Elena breaks up with her boyfriend and best friend, Matt, who is a football star, when school starts (they were not together over the summer). They were the golden couple; she was blonde and popular, but she felt that there were no fireworks in their relationship, and she wanted more. As their senior year begins, Elena pursues the mysterious new guy in town, Stefan Salvatore. He is staying in Mrs. Flower's old remote boarding house. Stefan rejects Elena's advances, and as the school's most popular girl, she makes up an imaginary boyfriend named "Jean-Claude" who she met over the summer, later explaining to Matt that it was made up: he was the handsome married gardener. Elena also hangs out at the cemetery at her parents' grave site. Stefan's resistance is met with Elena's determination, and she eventually discovers his secret: Stefan is a centuries-old vampire. As Elena and Stefan fall in love, strange attacks begin to happen in the town while a dark and seductive stranger appears to Elena. He is eventually revealed to be Stefan's older brother, Damon. In Renaissance Italy, the brothers both fell in love with a young vampire named Katherine von Swartzchild, who later committed suicide after the two brothers turned against each other. They fought for her love and she decided to choose them both as lovers and exchanged blood with them, turning them both vampires. Fueled with rage, the brothers killed each other but woke up as vampires. The Awakening ends with Elena seeking out Damon whom she believes to be the prime suspect for Stefan's disappearance after the townspeople begin to suspect the latter to be behind the recent murder of the school's social studies teacher during the Halloween Haunted House, and the strange attacks.
In the books, Elena Gilbert is portrayed to have pale skin, blond hair and dark blue eyes. However, in the television series, Elena has light olive skin, dark brown hair and brown eyes. One of Elena's best friends in the novels is Meredith Sulez doesn't exist in the TV series. Bonnie also has both a physical appearance and name change in the television series, trading in her red curls and pale skin, for an African-American girl with dark skin and black hair and she is not timid and damsel-in-distress like as Bonnie is in the book, but instead, is rather courageous, confident and strong-willed. Caroline Forbes on the television series has a big personality change. In the books, she is mainly nasty, manipulative, scheming and always plotting ways to bring Elena down but in the television series, she is Elena's self-involved, oblivious friend, who is in love with Matt. In the books, Elena has a much younger four-year-old sister named Margaret but in the TV series, she has a slightly younger brother named Jeremy. In the TV series, Vickie is Matt's older sister, while Matt has no siblings in the books. In the novels, Katherine, the vampire whom both Salvatore brothers fell in love with, was originally from Germany. On the TV series, Katherine was originally from Bulgaria. Also, in the books, Katherine's full name is Katherine von Schwartzschild, while on the TV series, Katherine's full name is Katerina Petrova. In the TV series, Stefan has a strict 'no human blood' rule. However in the novels, he and Elena exchange blood very often and willingly. But recently, this has changed, as in the TV series, Stefan has began drinking some of Elena's blood in order to gain strength. In the books, after Elena's parents died, her Aunt Judith (who is engaged to Robert) came to look after her and Margaret, but in the TV series, Elena and Jeremy's Aunt Jenna looks after them and Robert does not exist. Stefan was renting a room at a boarding house in the book, while on the TV series, the Salvatore's own the boarding home since the brothers are originally from Mystic Falls, Virginia. In the novels, the Salvatore brothers are born in Florence, Italy while on the TV show, the Salvatore brothers are born in Mystic Falls, Virginia. They are also both significantly younger than the brothers in the books, Damon and Stefan in the novels were both born in the 1500's, while Damon and Stefan on the TV show, were both born during the 1800's.
