Although there are four characters in the band, there are not necessarily four people. The concept of Gorillaz is that there are no specific band members in each album or in each song so the band can be flexible in making completely different kinds of music. The only continuous member of the band is also the creator, Damon Albarn. He co-created Gorillaz with an animator named Jamie Hewlett who does all the illustrations. Since Albarn is the only consistent member of the band, they get collaborators to join in and help out with albums. So if you see them on tour, as I have, you will see animations in the background but the performers in the front. On their most recent tour with the album Plastic Beach, the performers included: Damon Albarn, Bootie Brown, Paul Simonon and Mick Jones (from the band The Clash), Little Dragon, Mos Def, Lou Reed, and a bunch of other artists. There are about 20-30 people on stage. These featured artists were not on their previous album Demon Days, maybe only one or two were. On Demon Days, there was also Ike Turner and others.
