Matthew 3:1-3 (ESV)
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'"
John the bapthist
John the Baptist was a prophet who baptized Jesus and prepared the way for his ministry. He was a cousin of Jesus and recognized him as the Messiah.
I will assume you mean Malachi 3:1. This verse describes the coming of the Messiah, whose way would be prepared by a special messenger. This Messiah will surprise his people. The New Testament says this prophecy was fulfilled in John the Baptist as the forerunner (Matthew 11:10), and Jesus as the Messiah.
The baptism of John the Baptist was a baptism of repentance for Jews. John was preparing the way for Messiah. The Jews believed that Messiah was going to set up His kingdom on earth as written in the Old Testament. Messiah was the coming King, who would defeat Israel's enemies. John was calling the Jews to repent, meaning to renew their commitment to The Law and prepare for Messiah. This made John's baptism both personal and national in nature. To be baptized, one had to be a Jew, or prepared to convert to Judaism, to acknowledge the Law as the guiding principle for life and to submit to the coming Messiah.
Jesus and John the Baptist had a close relationship as cousins and spiritual allies. John baptized Jesus, recognizing him as the Messiah, and Jesus respected and honored John as a prophet who prepared the way for his ministry.
To prepare the way of the Messiah.
Christos, meaning "anointed." In English, "Christ."John 1:41 - He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ). [NKJV]
No Islam does not believe that Jesus is messiah they believe that there is no messiah. They also believe that works get you to go to live with God (in Arabic Allah) in heaven. I for one believe that Jesus is messiah that he is the only way to get into heaven and that you have to believe that he died on the cross for our sins so that we might be saved.
John the Baptist played a significant role in the life of Jesus as a precursor and forerunner. He baptized Jesus, identifying him as the Messiah, and prepared the way for Jesus' ministry by preaching repentance and the coming of the Kingdom of God. John's role was to announce and pave the way for Jesus' public ministry.
St. John the Baptist was Our Lord's Cousin, & a very Holy Prophet, who prepared His Way. He was beheaded by Herod Antipas, when he criticized him for taking Herodias away from his brother.
