General MacArthur had promised that he would return and free the Philippines.

General Douglas McArthur was serving as Field Marshal of the Philippine Army when his air force was destroyed by the Japanese on December 8, 1941 immediately after their attack on Pearl Harbor. The Japanese invasion of the Philippines forced McArthur to retreat to Bataan until May 1942 when he was forced to leave and promised to return.

General Douglas MacArthur promised he would return and free the Philippines after being forced to evacuate during World War II in 1942. His famous declaration, "I shall return," became a rallying cry for Filipino and American forces.
