Although others had proposed the idea of cycles among known elements, it was Dmitri Mendeleev, a Russian chemist, who finally produced the idea of the Periodic Table of Elements.

Mendeleev noticed the similarity of chemical and some physical characteristics of groups of elements. This lead him to try to group elements according to their behavior. For example he noticed that Fluorine (F), Chlorine (Cl), Iodine (I) and Bromine (Br) showed similar behavior. Similar observations led him to produce the first Periodic Table.

Medeleev's table was so important for the development of science, that he went on to predict the characteristics of elements not yet discovered, such as scandium, gallium, technetium and germanium, which he predicted with the names of ekaboron, ekaaluminium, ekamanganese, and ekasilicon, respectively.

Mendeleev's achievements are considered as one of the cornerstones of modern science.
