Both Thompson's and Rutherford's models of the atom proposed that atoms consist of smaller particles. They both suggested that there is a central nucleus within the atom.
The "shell model" of atomic nucleus structure was proposed in 1962, which described protons and neutrons as arranged in specific energy levels within the nucleus similar to electron shells in an atom. It was developed to explain certain nuclear properties that were not accounted for by existing models at the time.
Rutherford
The Greeks knew you could split an atom via nuclear fission, and used philospohy and logic. Dalton used experimental plates to check for a nucleus and came up with his model experimentally.

The wave model of an atom was proposed by Erwin Schrödinger in 1926 as part of the development of quantum mechanics. Schrödinger's wave equation described the behavior of electrons in an atom as standing waves.
Thomson is responsible for discovering that an atom contains electrons.
The nuclear model of the atom was proposed by Ernest Rutherford in 1911. This model suggested that an atom has a small, dense nucleus containing positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, surrounded by negatively charged electrons in empty space.
The first atomic model was proposed by the Greek philosopher Democritus in 442 BC.

Models of atom are not perfect since they exhibit more features which are not present in model.Hence, an improvement is always required.
