Legally protected under the Wildlife Act 1953 and the Department of Conservation has to role to make sure that this happens. So the Deparment of Conservation take people to court if they deliberately hurt of kill kereru. The Department of Conservation also undertakes pest control in certain areas, as pests like stoats, possums and rats kill many kereru. Many local community groups also undertake pest control in their local areas for the same reasons. So there are many New Zealanders working together to protect kereru
