Christopher Columbus stopped at the island of Hispaniola to resupply his ships during his first voyage to the Americas in 1492. Hispaniola, which is now divided into Haiti and the Dominican Republic, provided fresh water, food, and other resources for his crew. Columbus established a settlement called La Navidad there before continuing his exploration.
Christopher Columbus was motivated to explore the west primarily by the desire to find a new trade route to Asia, particularly for spices and other valuable goods. He secured support from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, who were interested in expanding their influence and wealth. Their backing provided Columbus with the resources and ships needed for his voyage in 1492.
