In 1962 Robert Ettinger published THE PROSPECT OF IMMORTALITY and Evan Cooper published IMMORTALITY: PHYSICALLY, SCIENTIFICALLY, NOW. Both outlined the concept of cryonics. It is difficult to say which one was first. Robert Ettinger had published a science fiction story with a cryonics theme in 1948. Evan Cooper was lost at sea whereas Robert Ettinger's book was much more widely distributed and received much more media attention, so Robert Ettinger usually gets the credit. The word cryonics was not invented until 1965, however, so neither book used that word.
