Following Christopher Columbus' discovery of the Bahama Islands and Caribbean for King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, many European nations were attracted to this "new world," including France, Holland and of course England. Dutch pirates were a problem for Spain but never established a colony. France did attempt several colonies along the Atlantic coast but were removed during the 16th century by Spain. After the founding of St. Augustine in 1565, Spanish attempts to settle southern North America met strong resistance from Native Americans and failed. This opened the door for England to arrive on Roanoke Island (1558 NC) and at James Towne (1620 VA). Thereafter, England was able to claim the Atlantic coast, eventually including Florida.
