I believe the quote was more like "More whiskey and fresh horses for my men.". It was meant to boost morale.Where I heard that quote, it was related by historian Shelby Foote in Ken Burns' Civil War documentary (1990). Foote was (he said) quoting irascible Confederate cavalryman Nathan Bedford Forrest. The story went that Forrest and his exhausted men came in from a long patrol and someone asked, "General, what do you need?" Forrest grittily replied, "More whiskey! And fresh horses for my men!"
