The author of this saying is unknown. Its oldest known appearance is in a book called A Lawyer's Examination of the Bible by Howard H. Russell, which came out in 1893. He attributed it to George Washington, but it is not found anywhere in Washington's writings. It is thought that Russell may have had in mind a saying attributed to Washington in an 1835 biography by James Kirke Paulding: "It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe without the agency of a Supreme Being." But this quotation is also not found in Washington's works.

In short, this is an anonymous saying often erroneously attributed to George Washington.

Why is the bible both erroneous and without error?

That is a logical contradiction. It is impossible to be both erroneous and without error at the same time. A better question would be "Why is the Bible erroneous, isn't it supposed to be without error?" The answer to that question is that the Bible was written by mortal men, not an omniscient deity.

Did George Washington say its is impossible to rightly Govern a nation without God and the Bible?

No, he never said it.Many of today's religious followers mistakenly believe that the founding fathers based the entire form of government on the Christian faith. The reality is that we were breaking up with a country (England) that had a singular religious dogma (the Church of England) where the king was not just head of state, but was also the head of the church. In short, Church and state were (and to an extent, still is) combined with the government. The founding fathers wanted to get as far away from that as possible, and that's why they founded a government whose constitution puts up a solid wall between church and state, and did NOT utilize religious dogma in anything. George Washington (like many of the founding fathers) were Masonics, who as a group were more interested in the free and unrestricted expression of man, and the constitution of the United States is very much influenced by their philosophy. The quote: "It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible." is frequently misattributed to George Washington, mainly to his farewell address of 1796. However, just like the Cherry Tree, he never said it.******The quote is frequently misattributed to George Washington, particularly in regards to his farewell address of 1796. Some people believe it is derived from this statement:"Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens..."This quote: "It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible" is very similar to a quote in a biography of George Washington written by James K. Paulding [1836].The quote that appeared in this 1836 biography has never been proven to have come from Washington. Nevertheless, it is very probable that it is derived from the quote that is shown in the 2nd paragraph of Paulding's statement:"....for it was his {George Washington's} opinion that a man who is always boasting of his religion, is like one who continually proclaims his honesty - he would trust neither one nor the other. He was not accustomed to argue points of faith, but on one occasion, in reply to a gentleman who expressed doubts on the subject, thus gave his sentiments:'It is impossible to account for the creation of the universe without the agency of a Supreme Being. It is impossible to govern the universe without the aid of a Supreme Being. It is impossible to reason without arriving at a Supreme Being. Religion is as necessary to reason, as reason is to religion. The one cannot exist without the other. A reasoning being would lose his reason in attempting to account for the great phenomena of nature, had he not a Supreme Being to refer to; and well has it been said, that if there had been no God, mankind would have been obliged toone.' Did you know that the vast amount of criminal and civil code produced by humans put Gods supposed Ten Commandments to shame and really shows what a fraud the Bible truly is?

On the contrary, the vast amount of codes produced by humans are inferior to the 10 Commandments. Take for example the Ventura California law that states cats and dogs are not permitted to have sex without a permit. Or the Virginia law that says citizens must honk their horns while passing cars. Some have argued that the 10 Commandments are the foundation and basis for American law. This of course is a theological proposition but was supported by many of the United State's founding fathers and many other notable figures. Abraham Lincoln said "I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man. All the good from the Savior of the world is communicated to us through this book." George Washington said "It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible." Lastly, the 10 Commandments are prominently displayed in the United States Supreme Court (the highest court of law in our country) and in many other courts of law around the United States. Everything points to the Bible and the 10 Commandments as a credible and worthy source for moral codes to govern people by.

Did George Washington say that government could not work without God and the Bible?

Probably not. But even if he did, if it isn't in the Constitution it isn't part of our law.Answer:Well... not that government couldn't work; but that government couldn't work PROPERLY!"It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible." G.W.Yet, at the same time... He also said:"The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion." G.W.BE CAREFUL... there is a difference! It's an understanding that is easily lost on people."Let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle." G.W.Great pains were taken by the founding fathers to "keep government out of religion" -- but NOT "religion out of government."While they sought NOT to endorse any particular national religion -- they DID seek to include moral, religious principles within the Constitution."Our Constitution was made ONLY for a moral and religious people. It is WHOLLY INADEQUATE to the government of any other." (John Adams)
