Although often attributed to Stan Lee via his character Uncle Ben, Spider-Man's Uncle, Voltaire was the first person to use (or at leash publish this phrase) and was probably the source of its popularity / notoriety.

In fact we find records of a UK Member of Parliament in 1817 implying that a variant of it was already a cliché by this point.

Original version: "WITH GREAT POWER THERE MUST ALSO COME - - GREAT RESPONSIBILITY!" ~Stan Lee, in Amazing Fantasy #15(August 1962) - The first Spider-Man story.

The answer above is completely wrong. The phrase was first seen in Voltaire's book, "Œuvres de Voltaire, Volume 48)"

What is Superman's task?

This is NOT a simple question. Superman's tasks include rightng injustice wherever he finds it. (When Spider-man's uncle tells him "with great power comes great responsibility," well, Superman has more power than pretty much any other superhero. His responsibilities are mind-boggling.) He is also charged with protecting all life, and has sworn never to take a life if he can help it. The old TV show said he battled for "Truth, Justice and the American Way." He also protects the earth itself and any planets that contain life.
