The Ganges River flows through India, while the Indus River flows through Pakistan
While the Ganges River is sacred to Hindus, who believe it is a sign of holiness to bathe there, the river has experienced considerable pollution and as a result, it is a source of disease. While believers insist the Ganges is pure, in reality the Ganges contains a number of bacteria from all of the people who bathe and wash their clothes in the river: bathing in the Ganges has been known to spread such illnesses as gastrointestinal diseases, cholera, dysentery, and even typhoid.

While there are many scenic spots along the Ganges, the river itself is primarily known for its cultural and religious importance in India.
