That depends on whether you are talking about a story (and which one), or whether you are talking about real life, whether you are religious, etc. Lots of people would say that Christ saves Christmas from being just another marketing event. Some would say that Santa saves Christmas by bringing presents. If you're reading Doctor Seuss, the Grinch is the hero. Dickens... Scrooge is the hero. :) If we're talking real life, I think it is the people who keep the Christmas spirit alive and surprise people with gifts without taking credit for them... keeping that spirit of generosity and love alive, which is what the idea of Santa is all about. Real people save Christmas all the time, and make it magical and instructive even to adults who have forgotten how to look at the world with hope.
