Confederate General Robert E. Lee was more than just a great military leader. He served as an educational administrator when serving as the Superintendent of the US Military Academy. Granted that his chief aim was to graduate fine US Army officers. With that said, Lee kept three books on his writing desk, the Bible, the Book of Common Prayers and a book written by the stoic Roman emperor, Marcus Aurelius, called Meditations.
No, attendance at a military service academy is not considered active duty service. To be eligible for retirement benefits after 20 years of service, you must have served on active duty. Time spent at a service academy does not count towards this requirement.
