Various members of the Community Development team create new categories on WikiAnswers.
The Community Assistants set up the WikiAnswers email addresses for supervisors.
Things have not been messed up to find the category of a question. To find the category of a question, simply look below the actual question on the question's home page, and under that it should say "In: [category] [Edit Categories]".If you want to find the categories in general, you can either go to the blue bar to the left and click 'Browse categories' which is under 'Site Tools', go to the WikiAnswers home page and click 'Browse our (insert number here) categories), or type in 'wiki.answers.com/q/faq' on your address bar.
Usually, the system chooses up to three suitable categories - based on the wording of the question.
Under most circumstances, a question will normally fit into up to three categories - there would be no point adding more.
When you post a question - the computer system 'reads' the words and places the question into up to three categories depending on the wording. For example, your question has automatically been posted in the 'Questions about WikiAnswers' section because you used 'WikiAnswers' in the text.
There is no easy way to merge categories at this time. If you think that two categories should be merged, you can write to WikiAnswers @ Answers.com (without spaces) and request it.Another possibility is that you have run into a "mirror" category, where the same category with the exact same questions shows up in two different places within our category tree. We do this sometimes to make them easier to find if they are popular in different areas.
Categories That Need a SupervisorYou can browse the list of categories and look for those that say "Supervisor Needed!" in red. Here's the link: FAQ . Note that a click on each tiny, green arrow to the left of the name of the category will open up more (and sometimes even more) subcategories.Another methodOn the same page as listed in the link above, in the right column, you will see "Newest Categories." It is likely that some of these are still in need of a supervisor.Still need help scouting 'em out?You can also try emailing WikiAnswers @ Answers.com (no spaces).
It is perfectly safe to sign up for WikiAnswers.
Sometimes it can take a while. There are over 7,000 categories, and who knows how many questions. What I would suggest is to rephrase the question and ask it again. Make sure to categorize the question under the best category/categories [up to 3], that it would fall under.
There are currently not enough questions on this band to warrant opening up a category of its own. If and when we do have sufficient questions on Aerosmith, however, we would be happy to open such a subcategory.
Yes, that is why there are over 1,000 Supervisors that try to clean up the nonsense answers on the site. It helps if people let us know where they are in the forums.
Signing up for an account allows you to use more advanced features on WikiAnswers. You can't edit questions without signing up for an account because WikiAnswers wants you to sign up and contribute to WikiAnswers. Think of not signing up as a demo version of WikiAnswers - you can use some of the features of WikiAnswers, just to get a feel for WikiAnswers, and we give you just enough so you can figure out how everything works on WikiAnswers. Signing up for your account gives you all the standard features on WikiAnswers that you didn't get in your 'demo' version of WikiAnswers. The standard features include editing, while the demo version does not. Signing up for WikiAnswers is completely free, so signing up for WikiAnswers will allow you to edit questions. The other main reason is because of vandalism. 90% of vandalism occurs from unregistered users on WikiAnswers, so giving unregistered users the power to edit a question could potentially give them the power to wipe out every answer on WikiAnswers. That is why you must sign up for an account to edit.
