Roanoke was an English Colony, of which John White governed. John White returned to England. He returned to Roanoke in 1590 and was shocked at what he saw.

Croatoan was the name of a local tribe and nearby island but White had never discovered the fate of the colonists or his family. Roanoke had failed.
