King James of England owed James, Duke of York money. so he gave him some land instead. James, Duke of York gave some of his land to 2 of his friends Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. Lord Berkeley owned East Jersey. sir George owned West Jersey. but in 1702 the crown of England basically the king or queen forced east and west jersey to be together. so it got renamed New Jersey
