Mostly any of the Allied forces fought with the French. Often if allied aircraft crashed in a German occupied land, the French forces known as the "Maquis" would assist them in escape, so the French were accepted as a valuable ally to most all the "good guys" UK forces seemed to most often work with Frech forces.
They were horrible and cold because it was snowing during the war when the French and the English had to fight aginst Germany.
Well they fought because they did not want to go down with out and fight. But they knew they would loose a lot of men.

They set up the Maginot line. They thought that World War II would be like World War I. However, they got ran over in six weeks. After this, the French surrendered. So, the French were just like Poland or Norway in World War II.
