The question is meaningless, because Panasonic and Sony don't make one camera or camera type. It would be like asking: Is Honda better than Toyota? It would depend on who you ask, what their needs/preferences were, and which model they used. Same with cameras. Sony has been innovative of late, especially with their mirrorless cameras, and 'hybrid' focusing (contrast and phase detect types). Panasonic had been one of the pioneers with mirrorless cameras, and continue to have an advantage with their 'Four Thirds' standard in lenses. Their new FZ1000, while not a mirrorless type, is a one of a kind super-zoom. So, it depends on what you are looking for.

Look into bridge cameras. Not very handy, but decent quality. As an alternative Sony has cheap mirrorless systems which are pretty good.
