Haka are a traditional item of Maori culture. The best known is the "kamate kamate" created by Te Rauparaha.
Many others exist, and recently some 'corporate haka' are being created - the NZ Army, sports teams etc.

Nowadays the Haka is mainly performed for amusement or ceremoniously: a welcome for important guests or to commemorate an important day or event. The All Black's(New Zealands rugby team) perform it to scare opposition when they are about to start their match. The Haka is a challenge. it is a display of dexterity and agility that is used to instill fear in the opponent. the haka is never preformed for amusement. it is still used to this day in sports to lay out the challenge to the other team.
The first New Zealand rugby team to tour overseas, playing eight matches in New_South_Wales, Australia, in 1884, performed "a Maori war cry" or haka before each of its matches. This due to the fact that the greater percentage of the team were to be Maoris. Later when the team toured the UK it was made up of a broad range of Maoris however, 4 NON Maoris were selected.
