At the time, India was under British rule. The British Governor enacted many laws which threatened their way of life. Such as the Forest Laws which restricted free movement to a majority of the forest. The Governor also displaced many tribes from the forest. Another reason was the exploitation of the tribes providing free labor for the colonial officers. Most importantly was the degrading of the Bastar King who the tribes believed was the incarnation of God. For these reasons resentment towards the British rule was made known by the people and some of the elite. and thus led to the rebellion.
