hundreds of years ago, this used to be a pagan custom, they started out with real wax candles and finally graduated to electric lights in the 20th century.
When Christmas started going around, people started putting candles on their trees (don't ask why) and it started many house fires. When Edison came out with the light bulb, everyone decided it was safer. This is all i know.
