It's one of five Nobel prizes and has been awarded since 1901 to those who have "done the most or best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the holding and promotion of peace congresses." Nobel died in 1896 and left instructions for the prize in his will, but did not specify why he chose peace as a prize category.
