From the earliest civilizations, right up to the present (early 21st century), the belief in a catastrophic doomsday and/or day of judgment is a common thread in the majority of religions. Contemporary scientists also feel that the world will eventually end, it's just a matter of time. So, calling it a hoax would be inaccurate.
