Minnesota was originally inhabited by the Ojibwe and Dakota tribes. However, the first known foreign settlers in Minnesota were French Fur Traders who traveled through in the 17th century and set up trade agreements with the native people.

Camp Coldwater is called the Birthplace of Minnesota. COL Leavenworth and his band of explorers discovered the area in July 1820. It is located along the Mississippi River, just northwest of Fort Snelling. Because of the many fresh water springs in the area it became an important stopping area for those who were fur trading, exploring the area, and helping to build Fort Snelling. The first permanent dwelling was the home of Benjamin F. Baker, which became the center of the settlement.

Camp Coldwater was the first settlement of European-Americans in Minnesota that was not primarily a fir trading post, fort, or mission.
