You really should just read Chapter 9. They go to Finch's Landing where Scout fights with her cousin Francis Hancock because Francis tells her that Atticus is shaming the family by defending Tom Robinson. Francis even uses the the phrase "n----- lover" so Scout winds up punching him. Uncle Jack spanks her without listening to both sides of the story, so Scout doesn't speak to him until they are back home in Maycomb. Eventually, the truth comes out, though.

Scout and Jem receive air rifles from Atticus for Christmas. This is somewhat ironic because, as we find out later in the novel, Atticus used to be known as "one-shot Finch" for his shooting skills, which he hides from his children until he is forced to shoot a mad dog that wanders through Maycomb.
