There is Western speculation -- probably formulated by Victorians in the late 1800s -- that the original stone was the "...eye of a sculpted statue of the goddess Sita, the wife of Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu" from which it was removed.
As well, the stone may have been stolen from the French crown jewels -- according to speculation.
