The Union commander of Fort Sumter was Major Anderson. After a huge Rebel artillery bombardment, he surrendered the fort on April 13, 1861.

Since the commander of Fort Sumter surrendered to Confederate forces, it was a victory for the Confederacy. There was no chance to prevent Fort Sumter to remain in Union hands when it was running out of supplies and no reinforcements were able to reach the fort.
Major Robert Anderson was allowed to take the US flag which had flown over Fort Sumter with him when he left the fort.
This was the first battle of the Civil War. It consisted of a 39 hour shelling of the fort by the Confederates, after which, the Northern troops surrendered. There were no deaths on either side.
