Odysseus uses a sharpened wooden stake to wound the Cyclops Polyphemus. After getting the Cyclops drunk on wine, he and his men drive the stake into Polyphemus's single eye, blinding him. This clever tactic allows them to escape from the cave, as the blinded Cyclops can no longer see them.

Athena told her father Zeus that Odysseus wanted to go home to see his wife and son so Zeus told Hermes to go and tell Calypso to let Odysseus leave her island. She agreed and told Odysseus to make a boat and she gave him food and wine for his journey
Odysseus's primary motivation for surviving his journey is to return home to his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus. Throughout his trials and challenges, he is driven by his love for his family and his desire to reunite with them.

Odysseus is shocked and saddened to see his mother, Anticlea, in the Underworld because he thought she was still alive when he left for the Trojan War. Seeing her in the realm of the dead brings him great sorrow and adds to his already difficult journey back home.
