There is some difficulty in defining when and who created the first car. A wheeled vehicle with a motor to propel it was first used for military purposes in 1899, according to the following website: steamtraction.farmcollector.com. The first steam tractors were developed in the 1850s, and they were used widely after the Civil War.

Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot built a self-propelled vehicle or automobile around 1769, by putting a steam engine on a vehicle intended to be drawn by a horse.
Richard Trevithick created a "Puffing Devil" in 1801 -- possibly the first steam-powered road vehicle. (source: wiki automobile).
The ENGINE: Many websites credit Karl Benz with inventing what we call an automobile, principally because he developed a four-stroke cycle gasoline engine, built in 1885. His three-wheeled Motorwagen was assembled in 1885. His first four-wheeler appeared in 1893.

Gottlieb Daimler developed a four-wheeled vehicle with an engine in 1890 (it was a converted coach built to be pulled by horses).

German engineer Rudolf Diesel built his first Diesel Engine in 1897.
