Birds of every kind have been on the human menu since man first started hunting. Chicken served to purposes. They supplied both meat and eggs. Chicken has been domesticated since before 1400 BC. Gallus domesticus was one of the first creature to be domesticated.

Chickens, once domesticated proved to be one of the easiest foods to produce. Chickens lay eggs, which are an edible product as well as a source of more chickens (as long as you have enough roosters), and when they stop laying, you can kill and cook the chickens themselves. There are also a number of males which grow bigger, and you only need one per about 30 hens, so they are food as soon as they are large enough, but before they all start fighting.

Chickens can eat anything, so are easy to raise, though you get better meat and eggs if they are fed a good balanced high protein diet.

So, being so popular and prolific, there was a lot of chicken meat to be made into good dishes, and they became "famous" so to speak.
