They are named in honor of Alfred Nobel- chemical inventor of dynamite and other high explosives, who ( scrooge-fashion) or perhaps Warbucks fashion- after his death gave the endowment for the various Nobel Prizes- Not all are correctly styled (Peace) prizes, they exist in the categories of Literature, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Physiology(one prize), and Peace- there is also an Economics Nobel Prize of more recent vintage. The big ones have been awarded since l900. The only person to have won more than one Nobel award was Linus C Pauling, in the chemistry and the Peace categories- in separate years. Madame Curie won two but one was shared with her Husband. Needless to say there is no such thing as a ( Grand Slam) though an overlap category ( for example X-rays, discovered by Roentgen, have medical applications- but were considered in the Physics category- His was the first Physica prize. Overlaps can exist, but no Grand slams!
