Spain recognized the Mexican Government in 1830, but that did not prevent Spain from supporting certain generals in attempts to overthrow the government and return Mexico to Spanish rule with the winning General as the Governor of Mexico. The Spanish army waited in Cuba for such an opportunity. Juarez finally freed Mexico from all foreign occupation in 1867. Viva Cinco de Mayo. Long live May Fifth.
