Hannibal was a carthaginian general. His gratest accomplishment was that he took his army across the rugged and snowy Alps with a herd pf elephants
He advanced on Rome around the Mediterranean Sea coast and across the Alps. It was not a surprise as it took months to do this on foot.
Of about 40 elephants he took over the Alps, I believe all but one were smaller, Indian elephants with the one, larger, African elephant, being the exception.
Hannibal went over the Alps. He even took elephants with him.
The alps are made of snow, rock and ice !!!
Horace-Benedict-de-Saussure, whose studies in botany and geology took him across the Alps, is considered the founder of Alpinism or mountaineering. Alpinism implies climbing with difficulty in the Alps. A climber with this level of skill is called Alpinist.
Yes, he did. In 218 B.C., he had ~10,000 man with ~38 elephants. Only one survived their attack- the one General Hannibal had often ridden. By the way, if you see this... email me for the next clue for the treasure hunt. It's my full name (including middle) with '@gmail.com' at the end. Good luck!
Hannibal did not go directly to Rome from Carthage, which was in Tunisia. He went via Spain, and crossed the Alps to get to Italy.
