spain lost control of california and the rancheros secularized the missions
The Spanish controlled California in 1840. They built a lot of missions there and used them for more than just religious reason. The missions operated sort of like economic centers, and the Spanish also used them to keep political control.
Missions were associated with Catholicism, as they were often established by Catholic missionaries to convert indigenous peoples to Christianity. The Spanish colonial empire, in particular, utilized missions in regions like California to spread their religious beliefs and control native populations.
Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca Empire, which was located in parts of modern-day Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Chile. He established the Spanish presence in these regions by defeating the Inca forces and establishing Spanish control over the territory.
Currently all missions to Mars are unmanned. The only human aspect of these missions are the scientist and engineers that build the satellites or rovers/landers and the people that control them (mission control).
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centures, Spanish priests set up missions in various parts of what is now the state of California. These priests were members of the Franciscan order of Catholicism.
