This action led to several desertions, and marked the decline of the insurgent forces, eventually leading to Hidalgo's capture and execution on July 30, 1811.After Hidalgo's death, the independence movement devolved into guerrilla warfare, until Catholic priest Jose Maria Morelos took over the leadership of the insurgent army, but he was captured and executed too in 1815. Morelos' lieutenant, Vicente Guerrero, took for himself the duty to carry on with the war effort, eventually winning Mexico's independence on September 27, 1821.
