A chap called Chappe, in 1792, set up the first semaphore telegraph in France. Von Sommering built an electrochemical telegraph in 1809. Schilling produced an electromagneticone in 1832. Gauss and Weber established a regular service in Gottingen a year later. But the first commercial telegraph was British, on the Great western railway, set up by Sir William Cooke in 1839.
