The man who traveled the Three Forks area and explored the Cimarron River was Thomas Nuttall. The Cimarron Rivers is located in the states of Colorado, Oklahoma, and Kansas.

On July 25, 1805 William Clark reached the Three Forks and immediately moved on, some 25 mroe miles, up the westernmost of the forks, what they would name a few days later the Jefferson River. Lewis was two days behind him and on the 26th Clark went another 12 miles up the Jefferson, then turned back to the Three Forks to explore the middle fork, which they named the Madison River, after James Madison, then Secretary of State. On the 27th, he returned to the Three Forks at 3:00 pm and Lewis had arrived at 9:00 am.

Some of the larger tributaries include the Canadian River, in southern Oklahoma, the Neosho River (also known as the Grand River), in eastern Oklahoma, the Cimarron River, in mid-Oklahoma. Through Kansas and Colorado, the Arkansas River receives much smaller rivers as tributaries. The headwaters are in the Rocky Mountains near Leadville, Colorado.
