Since the 5.4 L - SOHC - V8 engine was first used in the Ford F-150 in 1997 it has used what is called coil on plug ( COP ) ignition . Each spark plug has its own ignition coil , the 4.6 L V8 started using the same system also
each spark plug has own coil must remove coil first to get to plug
The coil to the spark plug is called an ignition coil on a Yamaha EF600. It is also referred to as the spark coil. These two terms are used for any coil to the spark plug in a vehicle.

A Coil On Plug ignition system has a coil for each spark plug ( the 5.4 L has always been Coil On Plug - C.O.P. ) the newer 4.6 L are now Coil On Plug instead of having 2 coil packs - each coil pack handling 4 engine cylinders / spark plugs and using spark plug wires
It does not have a distributor or plug wires, there is a coil over each spark plug.It is called a coil on plug system. It does not have a distributor or plug wires, there is a coil over each spark plug.It is called a coil on plug system.
